Is there a way to Tweet to a list of recipients and only those recipients?

I have a whole pile of random Twitter followers. I wish to make an announcement to the people I follow who follow me, all of whom are people I know in real life. I am not interested in telling the random Twitter followers who all appear to be people who think I have a cool Twitter handle.

Is there a way to do this other than sending private messages to each of the people I follow on Twitter?

You might be able to change your settings to protected tweets only, and do it that way: "Accounts with protected Tweets require manual approval of each and every person who may view that account's Tweets."

Clever, clever.

Thanks for that!

You're welcome...but! there's a caveat: some further reading of that support page says that unprotecting your tweets will cause previously protected ones to be made public.

Don't do that.

Anyone you aren't following will be forced to unfollow you.

Twitter just isn't good at being a private or directed social media platform. For that you need Facebook or G+. Or here.

Oh, you know what you could do.

Tweet a link to a protected social network. :)

yeah, that's just "you can toggle between "all my tweets are private and i get to decide who can follow me" and "all my tweets are public" for your whole timeline.

This is probably the best plan, because I've apparently (checking my Twitter settings) already protected my tweets.

If that's the case, only people you follow can read your tweets.

Okay, that's good, because I appear to have all these people who started following me before I locked down my account. I would prefer not to tweet anything to them.

I suppose I could experiment and see if any of them respond to these tweets.

They should've been forced to unfollow you when you went private.

As an experiment you could set yourself not locked, then lock your account again. It *should* reduce your followers to just those you follow.

So, as an experiment I sent out a few tweets. No one has responded to any of them, even though I was dangling free Ello invitation codes at them. :)
