My only exposure to the prior concept is "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom", which I loved. Because, Disney with semi-dystopian SF?!
I do, however, have a couple of patients who have been buying gold as part of their prepping. My own prepping consists of my usual preparation to be without power and access to the outside world for 3 weeks from a really bad ice storm, plus iodine pills to prevent thyroid cancer from radiation poisoning. (Everybody else has those, right?) OK, I also checked distances to most likely nearby nuclear targets, prevailing winds and weather systems, most likely missiles to be used in the event, and rate of decrease of radioactivity for different distances from ground zero for low and high altitude detonations. I had a free half hour.
