Actually, I have a question for you about the author you and infinitehotel were discussing last weekend. Your recommendation so intrigued me that I now want to find that hundred or so page novella you talked about, but I can no longer remember either his name nor the title of the work.

(This was the author whose long novel infinitehotel tried to read but was unable to finish, and you recommended he try this shorter work. We were standing at the top of the stairs in a somewhat cramped space at the party.)

I don't know if that's enough information for you to go by but I thought I'd mention since you were kind enough to comment. I hope your comment doesn't serve as an answer to my question! :)

It was Engine Summer by John Crowley, which has been more recently published in a single volume with two of his other novellas. It's one of my favorite books--really good writing and deep emotional connection, scriptural in the sense of telling you things you already know, but sometimes forget. Plus, it has one of the closest descriptions of tripping I've ever read, although it's not called that :)
