Cavalier to Roundhead.

(Only in the sartorial sense, not the political or even sectarian ones.)

I'm chopping my hair. For the summer, I'm thinking of a buzz cut, or even just shaving my head. After that, I guess we'll see.

I'd like someone to take before and after photos. I'd also be interested if anyone would like to do the cutting. I'd like to ask whoever that is to preserve what ponytail I have intact so I can give it to someone who wants to keep it.

Please comment if you'd like to participate. For that matter, feel free even if you don't want to.

Do it! Welcome to the club! I'm guessing you'll look great!

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You volunteering help? :) [livejournal.com profile] nafe did at one point but I'm not sure how busy he is, what with [livejournal.com profile] lono_i_ka_makah and all.

[identity profile] bwilder.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, Sure! I actually have the equipment. I could do it between 11 and midnight tonight or sometime tomorrow evening. What say you?

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed, I'd assumed [livejournal.com profile] nafe would be using those clippers.

Tonight is bad, as I'm still in Connecticut right now. Tomorrow could work depending on timing.

I want to line up a photographer, too.

[identity profile] sea-bound.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If you still need a photographer, let me know! Friday night is the only really bad night for me.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! I'll keep that scheduling in mind.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and thanks for offering! (or acquiescing, whichever is more appropriate :) )

[identity profile] bwilder.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
My pleasure! Just lemme know!

Oh wow

[identity profile] mmeubiquitous.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That'd be so weird!

[identity profile] ladybird97.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwww!

Well, all good hair must come to an end. Good luck with the big change - I'm really interested to see how you'll look at each stage!

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm losing my hair in front, and I told myself long ago I wouldn't be that balding guy with a ponytail.

So I'm not. :)

[identity profile] ladybird97.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can understand that :) The equivalent for women is long-and-gray both, so I will probably have a cut of my own at some point in the future. I'm really curious to see what you look like with short hair- I think it'll look good!

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually like the "long-and-gray both" look, but that's just me.

I spent most of my childhood, up to middle school, being forced into crew cuts. I hated them.

I'm reclaiming short hair, now that I get to make my own hairstyle decisions.

[identity profile] lillibet.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Pamela Daniels, my class dean at Wellesley had a waist-length braid of grey hair that I thought was just gorgeous. It inspired me to grow my hair out again. I aspire to having long-and-grey hair.

I'm doing long-and-gray/white, because I realized a few years ago that I am more comfortable with long hair.

[identity profile] ladybird97.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
erk. Sorry. I didn't mean to criticize other people's choices. Obviously there are a lot of people out there who like this look :) I don't think it would work on me, though.

Not feeling criticized, just wanted to note that there are some of us out here.

[identity profile] puffydrake.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the ponytail should go up on ebay.

I want pictures... this is going to be so weird.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
My body parts are not for sale. (Rents, to paraphrase one of my friends, are negotiable.)

[identity profile] puffydrake.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
But it would be for a good cause! You could make it a fund-raising event and donate the proceeds (or at least some of them) to charity!

I'm sure there are lots of people who would love to own a piece of history...

(And I'm not sure I'd classify a disembodied ponytail as a "body part"...)

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing that was you farther down?

I can only imagine how nice the direct flights are.

I'm also sorry I didn't get to spend more time hanging out with you while you were here!

Guess I'll have to try the direct flight, eh? Really will want short hair in SE Asia.

[identity profile] donnad.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Nooooo....

You have such great hair! I can't imagine you without the ponytail. Some guys look silly with a ponytail, you don't. Some guys can't pull off a shaven head, I hope you can, but I think you'll look silly. (coming from the woman with waist length hair who's partner's hair is as long as hers.)

Make sure you post the pictures.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Truthfully, I had great hair. That was a decade or more ago, before it started thinning out. I've lost a lot of thickness and my hairline has been receding. There's really not much hair on the top of my head. It's just age, really, and I think I should accept that.

My current look makes me look silly and somewhat unkempt. I think it's time.

Most of my childhood, as I said, I had a crewcut, usually inflicted by Dad. So I have a pretty good idea of what I'll look like with a buzz cut, or a shaved head.

[identity profile] gravitrue.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember you chopped it a lot for the Moscow-Beijing trip; not sure it's been as long since then.

I think balding with a ponytail often looks nice; Andy Hickmott looked good that way. But I'm not sure it would work for you.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I got a crew cut for that trip, but I didn't actually shave it. Partly it's because I figured I'd get a different reaction in China as a short-haired Chinese guy.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I did want to thank you for the compliment! Didn't want you to think I didn't appreciate it!

[identity profile] choirsoftheeye.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been considering buzzing my hair for a while. We shall see.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Summer is a great time. Boston's not so bad, but if I spend any more time in DC this summer, boy will I want not to have long hair.

I'd also considered going to South Asia. Dunno if that'll happen this year, but Mumbai and Chennai are great places not to have a lot of hair, just about all year round.

[identity profile] oneagain.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I remember when I cut all my hair off--both times. I gathered it into a pony tail the first time and then handed the scissors to my girlfriend and said "cut". The second time was almost 12 years ago, shortly after arriving in Boston. I was mistaken for a guy a few times (yeah, even with these things hanging off my chest:)

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
*blink*

I can't imagine anyone mistaking you for a guy. At least, no one other than Mr. Magoo.

How to put this?

[identity profile] oneagain.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was different then. And many layers can hide or at least obfuscate boobs.

(Anonymous) 2007-06-07 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
On the subject of hair and weather, I’ve definitely got to agree with you there.

I might not have a ponytail, but a week in DC and New York (and the general shagginess) was more than enough to convince me I needed a trim.

Getting back into Singapore was the final straw, and said trim was pretty much the first thing on the agenda after the usual post-travel routine.

(p.s – can I just say how much I truly love the new direct flights? Not quite as good as I imagine a zeppelin would be, but a mere 16.5 hours on comfy seats?! Hell yeah!)

[identity profile] evilbunnymayhem.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm happy for ya, I think you'll feel cooler (during the summer) and it's really freeing. Get ready for the day after shower--it's SO weird when you realize there's much less to shampoo!
I can chop the actual tail (for safe keepin) if ya want- but the whole shaving I cannot as I don't have clippers.
Also- as a side note- can I pet yer head when it's fuzzy like Nafe?

Oh and one more thing-I'm around, kinda, this weekend... and moving in the next week to JP so I'll be accessable.

[identity profile] ishaa.livejournal.com 2007-06-08 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's funny, I am going to do the same thing! I'm not balding yet -- maybe I never will; you've met my uncles -- but I actually would prefer it short for the wedding.

Any thought of donating it to Locks of Love or a similar organization?
