Quick Boston Poutine report.

While the poutine at the All Star Sandwich Bar in Inman Square doesn't really deserve the name--the fries are shoestring and rather indifferent, and the cheese and gravy are equally wrong--the cheddar cheese fries at Zaftig's in Coolidge Corner are a remarkably good approximation. The fries are coated, and thus a little too crunchy, but otherwise not bad, and the gravy is excellent, though applied a bit too sparingly. It could use a little more cheese, too. But overall, it's not a bad stealth poutine, for Boston.

I liked the Cuban sandwich at that place.

I think it's the cheese which is hurting their poutine; I dunno where they get it but it's not proper curds. The gravy was OK by me.

You know, compared to "poutine", "lobster roll" was really rather self-explanatory. Even a crustacean-allergic Left-coaster like me could make a reasonable guess at what a lobster roll was. But poutine? Sounds rarther a lot like a word my Arkansas country-girl grandmother used for what straight boys hope to get from straight girls in haylofts.

So.... What's poutine? (Other than involving fries, cheese and gravy from what I could gather from your post.)

French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy. It's comfort food.

There are places in Montreal that will offer you versions with, in addition to that, bacon, mushrooms, bell peppers, smoked meat, and almost anything else. (I'm told of one that does poutine with foie gras, but I've not been there.)

Bacon works better than mushrooms, it turns out.
