Facebook group: "MTR: Putting other subways to shame"

(Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] julianyap, who remembered the group as a much catchier "MTR: Because anything else is just a subway.")

This won't mean much to you if you don't have a facebook account, but there's a group there called "MTR: Putting other subways to shame". One topic in the group is "Compare MTR to the subway in your city!"

I was laughing too hard to post anything about the T.

(Pointing it out for all the folks who came with me on the HK trip in '96.)

You might enjoy some of the recent posts of our dear Spatch who has been going gangbusters about the mbta for a few posts now.

By the time I got to HK that trip public transport was a blur. Besides..my goal in HK was to NOT be in charge of where we were going (something about traveling alone for 3 months - I just was happy to go with the crowd). Interesting side effect is that I don't remember a lot of details about that trip. I remember having fun. I remember sushi. I remember Victoria eating hot peppers until she cried (but she was still smiling). I remember the airplane landing next to skyscrapers and mountains. Umm... lets see.. there were still British flags.. and I remember ferry boats. And a pretty temple with lots of red and gold paint.

My favorite facebook group is still "I don't need sex because the T fucks me everyday".

Heh.

The MTR really is pretty nifty - I rather like the little lights that keep track of your journey AND tell you which side of the train will be facing the platform.

My favourite post from that topic, though?

"Agreed, London's underground is not a patch on the MTR, but it gave us English something to practice on before we built the MTR."

Personally, I always found the Underground rather charming - the wooden treads on the escalators were just so... quaint. A first-rate fire hazard, true, but quaint nonetheless.

Steampunk, even.

(Of course, I understand they've since replaced the escalators. Oh well...)

I do miss those. They had character! They got rid of them here, too.
