I have a number in area code 617.

I picked one up using GrandCentral, as some people find it useful to be able to call me using a Boston-local number.

If you don't have either this 617 number or my normal number and you'd like it, please get in touch and I'll arrange accordingly.

Does this cost money? Do you have concerns about privacy for your voice mails (or do you figure it is about the same as having voice mail in the first place)?

So far, it is free.

I haven't thought carefully about the privacy implications, but they don't seem significantly different from those of any other voice mail. GrandCentral is owned by Google now. Having Google keep your voice mail may or may not be better than having one's voice mail kept in one of the phone providers' systems.

I would like your 617 number, please.

If I already have your non-617 number, and it works fine, I assume I don't need the new one?

Correct. It's mostly so people calling from pay phones or land lines can reach me more cheaply.

Hey, I was recently considering Grandcentral, but they appear to have retreated into closed beta. Do they do invites or any such thing?

They did? I Did Not Know That.

Can you email me an address you'd like the invitation to go to? (username at livejournal works for me.)
