Anyone have experience of going to Tufts Dental School for a consultation? My dentist is an alum. I'm told my mouth would make an excellent teaching tool.

(I can hear snickering from the peanut gallery even from here.)

I'm looking at http://www.tufts.edu/dental/patient/index.html right now, and emailing a couple of people, but I wonder if anyone might comment on the process.

Thanks, everyone.

(Today's dental appointment was everything I don't want in a consultation: extended and uncomfortable, with the promise of great expense in the future. Thus the comment about how good an example my mouth would be.)

An important thing to question here is whether you would get discounted or free treatment in exchange for letting them use your mouth as a teaching tool.

Last summer, when I had no dental insurance, I let them use my mouth as a teaching tool at the University of New Haven dental hygienist school. They were quite thorough, quite friendly, and I learned a lot. It was all free; I even got free x-rays, and I kept them to take to my dentist in NJ. On the other hand, a cleaning and x-rays took probably six hours total, over the course of three mornings. It was definitely the kind of thing one does when one has more time than money.

I'm about to head to the Harvard Dental School (though Tufts is closer) for my care. There, at least, the student practice is the cheapest option available.

Yes, I remember your telling me that! It was one of the reasons I thought of it.

(BTW, I got your IM; call me? I have some info on that question.)

My periodontist recently had occasion to say, "Wow! I'm going to take some pictures of that." You have my sympathy.

Thanks!

(And sorry to hear about your periodontal problems. :( )
