Heads up! LJ's having money troubles.

http://bryant.livejournal.com/659249.html says:

"Some rather large percentage of the technical people at LJ have been laid off. Ops is reportedly still around, so maybe database problems and so on will still get fixed, but you gotta be concerned."

[livejournal.com profile] bryant also includes a few ideas on how to back up your LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] rmd posted a link to http://valleywag.gawker.com/5124184/the-russian-bear-slashes-a-social-network, which includes some background on the company.

Hah! Excellent.

(I remember we talked about Bryant back in the kitchen of the old apartment. I didn't realize you didn't know his LJ.)

I always have a don't ask don't tell policy about employee blogs -- I don't ask, I don't wanna know, I don't go looking, I pray they'll give me the same slack. ;)

In retrospect I sometimes wish I'd chosen a more obscure LJ name. I suppose I could postdate a bunch of posts that pretend to be from Kobe Bryant.

But I mean duh wiley's cool peeps.

Oh no! What'll we do? I am NOT going to start posting facebook notes.

Facebook notes, feh!

another of my friends posted about this, directing me to the most excellent ljarchive. downloaded it, installed it, and it took literally 3 minutes or so to back up my LJ. thank the divine. i'd been looking for a way to get my entries AND comments for a while.

Backing up, generally a good idea; panic, generally not. :)

Two points people have pointed out:

1) It should save them money to move their development costs to someplace cheaper, like Moscow or Montana, rather than LA.

2) They apparently canned the employees without severance or even notice, which is a nasty thing to do, and one which generally doesn't happen unless the company is short of money.

Any thoughts on how the non-technically inclined can back up an LJ?

Meaning, the methods I read about in the recommended post seemed to be for the technically inclined.
