This poll inspired by dinner conversation tonight.

At dinner, during some fiber geekery, [livejournal.com profile] quezz and [livejournal.com profile] awfief debated what size knitting needles the chopsticks actually were--my mother learned to knit using chopsticks, in fact--when [livejournal.com profile] awfief added that the little coffee stirrers from Dunkin Donuts were size four...and that she had, in fact, shaved down the ends into points to knit with them.

Which inspired me to ask:

Sorry. I've never knitted with something other than knitting needles and my inner thirteen year old couldn't resist.

Really, it was inevitable. :)

My father hand-knit all of my baby blankets. He wanted to knit them in one piece instead of in panels, so he made needles to knit them on. He took several-foot-long dowels, sharpened one end in the pencil sharpener, and wrapped paper tape around the other end to make an end so the knitting wouldn't slide off.

He now knits queen size blankets in a single piece.

Now that is hard-core extreme knitting!

The mere idea makes my wrists hurt! I hope he's switched to long circs now that good quality ones are readily available.
