H-Mart's opening has really caused the Market Basket next door to raise its game. They took over the former EXPO Design Center and doubled their size by moving into that space.

H-Mart is a mostly bi-coastal Korean supermarket chain. Like most Asian supermarket chains, it has a large and varied produce section. Typical of Korean grocers is its extensive array of pickled vegetables.

Market Basket is a local supermarket chain. The new store has a much larger produce section and now carries a wider variety of Asian foods.

Yet another reason to celebrate the arrival of more Asian supermarkets.

I had thought that it was all about H-Mart before, too, but some of my coworkers have told me market baskets near them had already expanded similarly. But we're talking like near melrose and lowell.
Either way, working near both of them is kind of great ;9

Do you know if they have fish suitable for sashimi?

I assume you mean H-Mart? Then yes, sometimes. The fish counter is pretty incredible.

There's a dedicated sashimi case, as well as a fairly large fishmonger section. I don't know if that section has fish specifically suitable for sashimi, but you can certainly ask them.

There's also a sushi vendor in the food court, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

I don't know about H-mart, but I've been told that the sushi section in most non-asian markets (e.g. Stop & Shop, Shaws, etc) is not run by the supermarket at all but is contracted out... and it has a totally separate supply chain. So no, the fact that they're making sushi next to the fish case does not necessarily mean that what's in the fish case is good for sushi...

The sushi cases/counters in the chain supermarkets are pretty clearly from a completely
different source. There's just no way that the fish at the fish counter could ever produce the stuff in the sushi counter.

H Marts fish section is fantastic. You could likely get decent enough cuts for sushi there
outside of the separate sushi section, but it would be pretty random what would qualify from day to day.

Laugh at what I say next, but my most used sushi-quality fish source these days is *Costco*. About 75% of the time I can get a full salmon side out of their fish
section, most of which is useable for sashimi. Slightly smaller hit rate on their
ahi tuna, but still damned decent. Less often some fluke or turbot. Mmm. usuzukuri...

Must go back to H mart soon. I want to make some gefilte fish, and there's nowhere else I'm going to be able to walk in and get carp, whitefish, and pike.

Costco's fish section is really quite good. People underestimate Costco in general, I think. Although maybe that's mostly the people who don't have memberships.

I think I saw white kim chee there. I'll check next time I'm there.

We checked! There was white radish kim chee, and some mixed radish and cabbage kim chee that was not particularly red. Don't know if that's what you meant.
