This is the photo that went with my previous post, which for some reason LJ didn't let me upload.

Millions of dollars worth of $1 coins languish in a vault at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's Baltimore branch.

You can! You can order them through the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program.
Now you can get circulating Presidential $1 Coins and Native American $1 Coins (non-numismatic coins) in quantities of $250 or $500, shipped directly from the United States Mint to you! The coins will arrive in boxes of 25-coin rolls within about two weeks, and the United States Mint will pay the standard shipping and handling costs (domestic orders only).

For the Circulating $1 Coin Direct Ship Program, the United States Mint accepts credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) and debit cards issued as check cards with a VISA or MasterCard logo.
This means if you get miles or cash back, you can actually get cash or miles back from your credit card company for ordering money.

They really are desperate to get rid of them.

I really should have done that back when I was going out for lunch five days a week. I think it would take me a looong time to go through that many dollar coins now.

Hunh. I'm waiting until people start figuring out that this can be used to get a cash advance on your credit card without paying cash advance charges right away.

Shipping must be brutal for coins!

Yes! Not only are they willing to eat the credit card fee, but they're also going to eat shipping and handling fees.

As I said, they're desperate.

Really, what you want to do is to be able to rent the room containing the coins for the cost of a re-rolling fee.

Go in past a metal detector. Leave past a metal detector.

For an added fee, the coins can be sterilized...

Are those coins in the picture loose, or in rolls?

Loose.

Now I'm reminded of Carneggy's idea of going to a con with a big bag of dollar coins and spending them there (calling them 'gold pieces', of course).
