The problem with Spirit, in my opinion, is that they're just not that cheap compared with the competition. Ryanair gets away with what it does because even after you add in all the fees, they're *still* miles cheaper than the alternative. Not always, and not on every trip, but enough to make it worthwhile.
I recently priced Spirit to Colombia or Peru, and they just weren't any cheaper than the competition. LanPeru can get you to Peru damn cheap, and Copa (the Panamanian national airline) can also be a good deal, plus you get a free stopover in Panama City. Whereas with Spirit I have to change planes in Fort Lauderdale. Where's the fun in that?
