My theory can be tested, to some degree. In much of Europe, it seems that the farmers are very heavily subsidized, and there may be subconscious realization that their living depends on the continued perception of farming as central to the national identity. This would cause fear of cultural change. In the US, farming isn't so highly subsidized, and the more prosperous farmers would probably have less to fear from cultural change. This should lead to a lower level of xenophobia.
