Chinese culture has always had a very strong division between marriage and personal taste. (Much like the situation in Europe before very recent times.) As I read somewhere, the attitude in China and much of eastern Asia was that one was obligated to marry and produce sons for one's lineage. Having satisfied his filial obligations, what a man chose to do for his sexual or romantic fulfillment was a matter of personal taste, not a matter of morality.
