Is this a good time to come visit? I understand there's a Federal shutdown. Does that mean it's easier to get around? Or is this a particularly bad time for reasons you'll enlighten me about in comments?

I'd be coming down to see folks, not to visit Federal institutions.

But I'm out in Fairfax, where there's not much in overt impact on daily travel trends that I've noticed. I rarely go into DC itself.

You can't go to museums or the zoo. Other than that, it is a fine time to visit. There is slightly less traffic on the metro (though not quite as much of a decrease as I might have expected).

On a personal selfish note, don't come down next weekend because I will be away Thursday - Monday (Columbus Day Wknd).

What the others said. If you don't care about museums / zoo / monuments / glen echo / great falls / rock creek and such then you will have the benefit of rush hour being less nasty. When are you thinking to come?

Rush hour is lighter, but there's more traffic throughout the day.
