Well, in my question I was actually distinguishing between vehicles, in that the distinction between heavy rail (subway/metro) and light rail (streetcar/premetro) is fairly well-established both in the fan and professional communities. The Green Line is, for many analysts, distinct from the other T lines.
Like most attempts to categorize human endeavor, there are many places one can draw distinctions. Deciding whether Thameslink is heavy rail metro or commuter rail is one of them, for example. Reasonable people can differ on this.
I very much would love to see a list of transit systems which run all-night, including those (London, Paris, Montreal, for example) which use buses to provide service, but I think it would require quite a bit more time and effort than I have to devote to this.
