There seems to be an inherent assumption there that one is *supposed* to pay attention on a conference call.
The ones I'm on, most of the time there's a tiny part of my brain that's listening for my name or maybe a few other keywords about which I might contribute something, and that's what I'm on the call for, but that's it as far as my participation goes. If I wasn't doing one or more other things it would be a huge waste of time.
Of course, I think there are a bunch of assumptions about meetings that aren't necessarily true, and "everyone should be paying attention all of the time" is pretty near the top of the list. It depends so very much on context!
