Oh, I'm not doing this, at least not this year. I came up with a different plan after sketching out how this plan might work.
Thanks for the Airbnb suggestion! Unfortunately all the listings for under $150/night are for tent rentals. And not for staying in a tent, for renting the gear and going somewhere else! Crazy.
ETA: all the listings in Key West, that is. Key West lodging is pretty expensive; the hostel beds are $65/night.
