randomnessToday I learned why Singapore's downtown Chinatown is called 牛车水 (niú chē shuǐ), or "Ox-cart water". Wikipedia says "because of its location, Chinatown's water supply was principally transported by animal-driven carts in the 19th century. The name is also echoed in the Malay name, Kreta Ayer, with the same meaning."
Like San Francisco Chinatown, Singapore's Chinatown is now mostly for the benefit of tourists.
