I'm watching a mass move of my flist from LJ to dw.

Could I ask those of you who have made the move and backed-up/downloaded your data from LJ what you used to do this?

I have been using dw since 2009, crossposting all the while. One thing that has stopped me from making a clean break with LJ is that I haven't downloaded all my old posts and comments.

If you have useful suggestions on how I might do this, I'd really appreciate it if you shared them with me.

Thanks!

This thing. Do not expect it to go fast, particularly given the mass exodus now in progress.

(and I now find it intensely annoying that I have to put in the link using raw HTML, instead of it being automagically link-ified for me.)

I used that thing, too. It worked well, but did take a while because of the mass exodus.

It worked seamlessly, but be aware that URLs that point to your LJ will continue to point to your LJ, and that comments and the like will retain their LJ user IDs. (Which, I mean, is basically what you'd expect, but I hadn't thought about it.)

The preceding comments make the point that DW itself is a back-up for LJ. I'm told (though have not yet tried) that the best remaining self-machine archive for LJ is https://www.blogbooker.com/lj.php

What browngirl said. I'm also in the process of waiting for the dreamwidth migration tool to do its thing. It allegedly should be pulling over my entries with comments intact (with openid links for commenters, I guess).

It took a couple days but my DW journal seems to now have all old posts and comments.

i signed up for migration, but i have a feeling i may still cross-post to LJ and use archive to store everything on my own harddrive. i have people i want to read who probably won't leave.

this is why we can't have nice things.
