My friend Colby likes Anna's a lot. So much so that I pretty much expected he'd suggest it when I wandered over to his place to see if he'd be interested in lunch today.

For some reason, people really seem to like this local chain. I think it's okay, but not up to the standards of some of the little hole-in-the wall non-chain taquerias in the area.

It's certainly convenient and fast, although I find that it's not as inexpensive as it looks after you add all the extras: guacamole, cheese, and sour cream are all extra (30¢-55¢).

Anna's has a very modular menu. There are various formats:
burritos in regular ($2.95) and super ($3.40-$3.75) sizes,
tacos ($1.95-$2.05), quesadillas ($2.60-$2.95), and mexican plates ($3.95). You choose a filling: chicken (regular or grilled), carnitas, chili verde, steak, grilled vegetables, or bean & rice. That determines your main dish order.

Mexican sodas ($1.50) and juices available, as well as the usual soft drinks.

So, the closest thing I've found quality-wise to the ubiquitous *berto's taquerias in San Diego County (on which more at some point) is Taqueria Tapatio, listed in the backlog entry. It's a little upscale from most of the *berto's. For one thing, it actually has inside seating. (Okay, not having inside seating isn't particularly viable in Boston most of the year, I'll admit.)

Nonetheless, pretty good stuff. And Univision on the TV. :)

If I could get over the feeling that they actually don't like my type there--not that they've been anything but efficient, but I still feel like I get the hairy eyeball; is it the long hair? or what?--I'd have no complaints.

I actually like Anna's...but then, I don't care about authenticity so much because I'm not really into Mexican food. I just go there for the roasted vegetable burritos with black beans. Tasty.

I hear the most is that they cook their rice in chicken stock, so they have no actual vegetarian entrees.

I used to like it well enough, but then I never bothered to convince myself it was authentic Mexican taqueria food, when I knew otherwise. Still, it's far closer to authentic than anything here in Sweden (which should come as no surprise at all).

I fail to understand why Anna's keeps winning the "Best Burritos in Boston" awards. They're ok, sure, but Boca Grande (outside of Porter Square, among other places) and Picante (in Davis Square, one block from the Anna's) are much better.
