Annye and I agreed that sushi was generally a good idea. So after considering a place out in the Sunset (Yum Yum Sushi) but deciding going out there and back would take too long, we went to We Be Sushi, only a couple of blocks away from where we were.

We Be Sushi is a local chain of sushi bars which does inexpensive but edible sushi. The price vs. performance balance here is particularly good. It's not the best sushi around, but it's fine for a quick lunch. There are some non-traditional rolls, like the Latin Wave, or the Eggplant. I had an order of saba (mackerel) sashimi ($3) and the lunch special ($5.95, not available for takeout) which included California-maki and a few pieces of assorted nigiri. The fish was reasonably fresh and the California rolls were made with real crab, not crab stick. All in all, nothing spectacular, but not bad either.

I've read elsewhere that the quality varies greatly between locations. In particular, the one at 538 Valencia has been singled out as a place to avoid. I've only eaten at the 22nd and Valencia location. Note that they're cash only.

Sushi lunch for around $10. Works for me.
