Apparently this setup is being run by Yahoo! Cafe here at Narita. Wheee.

Anyway, I still think the Pacific is too big. Or, more accurately, it takes too damn long to cross. How long does it take? Long enough on my flight from Kennedy to Narita for me to get a full night's sleep, and then get up and watch back-to-back Lord of the Rings movies. Oh, yeah, and get fed twice.

Another 6 hour flight to Bangkok and this day's travelling is over.

One fun thing about All Nippon Airways: there's a 'flight camera' channel. As you fly along you can tune to that channel to watch live feed from a camera pointing down. Most of the way across it was pretty boring, but on final approach it was fun to look down at the area around Narita. A couple of minutes before landing they changed the point of view to the nose camera, so I watched as we touched down on runway 16R.

I don't know if other people found this unsettling. (They were showing our approach on the main screen, so everyone got to watch.) I enjoyed it, but that could just be me.

I love the flight camera channel, but it's equally boring on the way to New Zealand.

So that's why nobody could hear you on the phone.

I like flight camera. In theory, having never experienced it.

I find flying unsettling, period, these days....

So I bet the flight camera would actually make me feel better. Engine noise and flying through clouds drive me batty (and security checkpoints shred my patience beforehand), so a better view of what's going on would prolly make me happier.

I haven't flown in over a year. It's been a nice break, but I'm looking forward to going to Houston for Labor Day weekend.

I really like the flightcam idea... never experienced it, but I'm a nervous flier, and knowing what's going on makes me a lot less nervous. I strongly prefer window seats for the same reason. Control freak? Moi? :-)

Used to be, some airlines would run the radio communications on an audio channel. I miss that.

The only airline I know of that's done that at all recently is United, and they still do it, subject to the whim of the flight deck. It's channel 9 on most of their aircraft.

Yah, I really like that feature, myself.

In fact, I'd love having the combination of "From the cockpit" on audio and "Flight camera" on video.

(What, you think I should just go to flight school and fly myself? It's a thought. :) )

Definitely. And hey, general aviation is really taking off in SE Asia; check out the "Other Flying Clubs" section of the web page of the Thai Flying Club for a good set of links.
