"[T]hough I enjoy watching American football it has always been best described as having some of the worst aspects of American culture - violence, punctuated by committee meetings."

My Opa was raised on rugby. One time when he was visiting us in the US, my dad was showing him some American football. Before long, Opa was muttering, "Ach, not another bloody conference!"

I've seen this quotation before, several times, so it can't be as new as yesterday. Googling for it seems to indicate that the original source was George Will. There are probably much better search tools for quotations, but I don't know what they are.

So, I will cheerfully admit that George Will may have said it, but here is where I got it.

If there's an earlier citation of George Will, I'd love it, 'cause then I'd change the attribution in my .plan file.

I wonder if George Will will complain to The Scotsman, since there's no attribution from Gavin Esler, and the guy (Esler, not Will), is a presenter on BBC2's Newsnight.

I mean, imagine Peter Jennings stealing a quote from a British columnist.
