The Rough Guide to Brazil claims that this cafe/bakery has "what is probably the best bread anywhere in Brazil. Not to be missed." I decided I needed to try it.

Casa Bonomi has no sign, but is reasonably easy to find, and worth the small effort. The decor is understated and simple, dark wood and stone. The setup is standard walk-up cafe: ask at the counter for items in the display case, take your food and choose a table. Service was polite even though my Portuguese was awful.

And the food itself is quite good. I was only looking for a snack, so I picked up a croissant (R$1.90, US$0.60), and a pao de milho--cornbread, in roll form --(R$2.10, US$0.67); but all the usual cafe options are available, including sandwiches, pastries, pasta, and crepes. Both were tasty: the pao de milho was a surprise because I didn't actually remember what "milho" meant, and the croissant wonderfully buttery and flaky.

This is the sort of place to linger over your coffee and read the paper, though the lack of air-conditioning could be a problem on hot days.
