Empirical result of microwaving 5.5 L of Arm & Hammer liquid detergent for 4 minutes.

First, I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions; I was in a hurry and didn't get a chance to read them before I microwaved the jug, but it's clear to me that your idea of running it under hot water is probably much more sane than what I actually did.

However, I can now say that microwaving the stuff does warm it up. I got a couple of hot spots after 1 minute, but the huge frozen block in the center was still frozen. I shook it a bit and then put it in for another minute. Again, hot spots, and in the same place.

So, I shook it, positioned it facing a different way, and microwaved for another two minutes.

At this point I had melted enough that I figured that, combined with the dregs from the old bottle, I had enough liquid to wash a couple of loads of laundry, and I left the large bottle to melt in the bathtub, in case it had developed a leak.

The melted detergent looked, smelled, poured, and most importantly, washed like detergent ought to, so it appears to have worked out. Also, the large bottle did not seem to leak after being left in the tub for a few hours.

So, there you have it. Again, I do thank you for the reasonable suggestions; if I hadn't been under time pressure I would have waited longer for replies, and actually followed them. :) You're all more sensible than I am.

Utterly tickled.
Where are you now, BTW?

Still in Massachusetts. I saw [livejournal.com profile] julianyap briefly last weekend when he was in town.

Plans to go to Sri Lanka got a bit deranged by the tsunami. Though my friend says he and his family are fine, the center he works for was completely washed away.

He's still encouraging me to go but we're discussing when, so I don't get in the way of disaster recovery.

I would like to add that laundry detergent, if left semi-exposed to the elements, (say, spilled in a car trunk... ahem) eventually turns into a thick, oily substance that I would equate with chunky petroleum jelly.

Iewww. :)

If you found this out the hard way, sorry to hear it...
