Lo Mein in Boston.

So, hypothetically speaking, if I were looking for that old Cantonese standby, lo mein, and I wanted the best I could find, where in the Boston area would I go?

Less hypothetically, if it were quarter to midnight on Friday night, and I were in Somerville, would I still be able to find lo mein that was significantly better than the stuff I could find in the late night Chinese delivery places?

Even less hypothetically, anyone want to go search for it with me, starting from somewhere between Davis Square and Powderhouse Circle? Right now, I mean.

That sounds like a nifty theme for an expedition! Any other night I might be just getting hungry again at midnight and be interested in continuing to be social. Unfortunately, after two days of having a chipper electrician show up at start-of-contractor-day to start work on my bedroom, I think succumbing to sleep is the right thing for me to do. Have a fulfilling (and filling) quest!

*nod* Get rest! It sounds like you need it!

Thanks!

still home? still awake? :)

[identity profile] wolfkitn.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
actually, i think the canonical wall of sleep hit me over the head about 4 minutes ago (this not being a bad thing...), and so i am sleeptyping until i make it to the bathroom and thence to bed.

hey, meant to ask you -- you've seen the one-acts? how are they going?

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Go, sleep! Get some rest. :)

I saw some of them in rehearsals. What I saw looked quite good, and by all accounts they're going well. You should see them.

I'm between Davis and Powderhouse and could go for something to eat if you're around and get this. Stop by my place if you do. I should be up for another hour or so.

At this point, the question is what's left open.

(If the answer is Colby's favorite late-night option, "the Lau"...well, I'll pass. :) Mostly because I posted this in the first place hoping someone would suggest a better option.)

But I suspect even "the Lau" just closed. :(

It's true. The only place I know that's open is IHOP, but I'm pretty sure they don't serve lo mein. Anyway, let me know. I'm still up.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Naah, not doing IHOP.

Ah well, maybe someone will come up with a suggestion for next time.

iirc, Wang's in Magoun Sq is open late.. while I've had their lo mein, I'm not sure how it compares, but they are generally pretty good.

[identity profile] r-ness.livejournal.com 2005-07-16 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, that's good to know. I've never ordered anything from Wang's that wasn't northern Chinese, so I've never tried their lo mein, and thus have no idea how it is.

Thanks!

I'm actually moving over near there, so we'll have to find out ;)

Hm. It appears that Brezhnev's is only open until 10. Which is too bad; though they like Wang's are mostly northern Chinese (and have awesome scallion pancakes) I am quite fond of their lo mein.

Obviously too late for this time, but... in Chinatown there are a couple of places open until 2AM during the week and 4AM on weekends. Can't remember the name of the main place, it's right next to the arch and has spawned a couple of outposts nearby... damn! It'll come to me.

Oddly, there's also Ginza in Chinatown, which serves Japanese food and is open similar hours.

Chau Chow City!!! Also Grand Chau Chow. And possibly Chau Chow Kitchen, I'm sure there was a third one spawned recently.

83 Essex Street in Chinatown.

Google is your friend. Now I'm all hungry for steamed sea bass.

I don't know what would have been open, but both Royal East near MIT and Wok & Roll in Porter Square have excellent lo mein.

[identity profile] noire.livejournal.com 2005-07-17 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Grand Chiu Chow (or however they're spelled.) The ginger scallion lo mein is TO DIE FOR. Truth.

Even if it is a day late...

I know I'm way late, but...

The hole-in-the-wall Chinese place on College Ave actually makes a decent lo mein (so sayeth the uncultured round-eyes) and has the distinct advantage of being open on weekends until 1AMish. Or at least, they did when I was living in Davis.
