I thought it would be better to talk to you to tell you about it. Sorry about the gratuitous misdial after the fact when I thought I was calling someone else--that just came out wrong. Gotta check in with that inside/outside voice concept...

There's also a small Toscanini's at 500 Kendall Street in Cambridge, in the small building that also serves as an entrance to the underground parking garage just outside of the Genzyme building.

There's a big new Toscanini's at Beacon and Washington as well. Which is not to say that I'd recommend them for much of anything with Christina's down the way.

I'd call Mad Maggie's the best of the lot for my palate, with Christina's the best in-town option. (This rankles slightly, since they pissed me off several times in the past when they were trying to figure out how to run a business without being total flakes, but good ice cream is good ice cream.)

When do people not think about ice cream, though? Perish the thought.

Another in the "basic farm stand ice cream" genre (which I think describes most of the places above) is Hodgie's in Amesbury, very near I-495. (Exit onto 150 briefly, hang a left on 110 at the light, and they're down the road a bit on the right.)

I second Mad Maggie's as wonderful! I am also partial to Richardson's, at least partially because I like visiting the cows who gave the milk to make the ice cream, and because they sell milk from those cows. I drink skim milk, and theirs actually tastes like milk...

That was just cruel. I am far far away and bitterly craving ice cream right now.

Wow, I've only been to maybe 6 of them. . .my work is cut out for me. . .

Is it sad that this is the post that makes me think I need to move to Boston?

I have to say though, some of the best ice cream I've ever had was in Pennington, NJ. But ice cream after driving for hours on the Jersey Turnpike always tastes better :P

There's a new Emack & Bolio's in Porter Square shopping plaza, in the building with the CVS. Right next to the entrance to the womens' only gym... (In the words of the immortal Nelson, "ha ha!")

Oooh! Thanks for this delicious-looking list! I actually went to Toscanani's (whichever one is near Hahvahd Yahd) a few weeks ago, and it was splendid (though lacking seating)!

Also, have you ever been to Yelp.com? It's a consumer review site where people can make lists like this one that you can mark on personal and sharable maps. It might be a convenient way for you to organize and archive some of your amazing restaurant reviews... after you post them here, of course. :)

The Ben and Jerry's in the Park Plaza is right near my office. My cow-orkers and I have been known to stage mid-afternoon "getting in touch with our inner cow" runs. (Moo. Elevators. 3:00. was all we needed to say....)

There's an Emack & Bolio's that opened up right next door to my gym in Porter Square. (Not fair, I tell you, not fair at all.)

I used to go to White Farms a lot when I was a kid. It has great French vanilla.

Mad Maggies is, of course, amazing.

I wish we could duplicate the macadamia ice cream that you got in Tampa though. That was a buttery, creamy bowl of divine loveliness.

There's also a decent ice cream stand on 117 in Weston.

And, there's an Emack & Bolios (which I can't not call "Emacs") in the CVS building in Porter Square.

It seems odd that there isn't any high-quality ice cream there, given the abundance of other dairy products.

But I imagine--as you or [livejournal.com profile] rednikki said--it's a matter of demand. Which also seems odd.

Not in the CVS so much as in the multi-purpose building the CVS is in.

(It's the freestanding building in the parking lot of the Porter Square shopping center.)

Agreed, there is ice cream and some of it is beyond decent, into spectacular, but they have just removed my favorite lotte ice cream (little ice creams with mochi around them, YummY!!!!) from the market. Additionally, while green tea and seseme almost make up for a weakness in the chocolate aspects of ice cream I don't see it as a fair balance.

a web site that i came across, recently, that you clearly should know about if you don't already: www.agilitynut.com/roadside.html

100% up your alley (and down the highway, as well ;) ).

do you have any suggestions for particularly good gelato places in the north end? i miss gelato...

So, believe it or not I don't actually have any memory of having gelato in the North End. Little Italy in Manhattan, yes. Bologna, yes. Florence, yes. North End, no.

Clearly this problem needs fixing. I'll be glad to go exploring for it.
