Um. More fibrous and pulpy than lychees or longans. Taste is distinct. Flavour is more delicate/subtle than longans or rambutans, imho. Closer to lychees.

You occassionally get a resinous aftertaste (much like what happens with some bananas that are'nt fully ripe) - the gamboge mentioned in the article. When you do get the ones with translucent flesh, still very good, though the fruit is a little firmer. Almost crunchy.
One good thing about having the fogeys in town - they're willing to spend a lot more on incidental luxuries like fruit. We just picked up several kilos of mangosteens... heh.
