Does anyone know why no showtunes are available for the various Karaoke Revolution games?

Maybe it's the people we know, but many at the party [livejournal.com profile] holmes_iv this weekend--and for that matter, at previous parties held by [livejournal.com profile] monkeygod and [livejournal.com profile] mysticysm--really wished for showtunes. ([livejournal.com profile] bedfull_o_books, was one of them, of course.)

I can't find any answers to this on line, so I thought I'd throw the question out there for speculation. :)

Another question! Which showtunes are perfect for Enrique, Monique, the robot, and the goth girl? :)

Enrique must sing "The Impossible Dream" or "Climb Every Mountain."

Robot gets the entire score of My Fair Lady.

Monique...I dunno. My clever ideas just ran out :)

I'm guessing it has to do with copyright, but that's just a guess.

Is Karaoke Revolution not covered by the compulsory licensing scheme? I would have thought that it would be. (Basically, there is a mandatory licensing structure for music-- anyone can record a cover of any copyrighted song, without prior permission, as long as they pay a royalty to the composer/arranger. Organizations like ASCAP exist to manage the process of getting the royalties to the copyright owners. It's really a model of one of the few things that copyright law does right these days- a similar model for movies, TV, and books would greatly improve copyright law, although the details are difficult.) Anyway, assuming that's how Karaoke Revolution and the like works... show tunes would be covered just like anything else. So the only reason they aren't on there is editorial choice.

IAAL, but this is WAY outside my fields of expertise. Perhaps one of the IP jocks will weigh in?

I should go see what the song lineup is for the new Sing Star game.

Gee, do you have Sing Star? I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] bedfull_o_books would be interested in trying it out.

I haven't found Sing Star, just the variant Sing Star Rocks (which has a pretty dull lineup). However, I do have a copy of Karaoke Revolution 3, which she would probably have FUN with.
