So, that upper incisor I've been having trouble with? Imaging shows that the tooth is just hanging there, almost completely unsupported by bone, which has been eaten away by infection. It's coming out.

Tomorrow afternoon.

What a great way to celebrate my (Chinese calendar) birthday! Doped up on novocaine and with a newly gap-toothed smile.

Grumpf.

(Hugs and sympathies to my friend who's already gone through this and is already dealing with having a "flipper". I'll be thinking of you.)

Edit: And it's restaurant week! Won't be doing that this week, not while I'm on a liquid diet.
Related question: does anyone have a dentist/periodontist they like in Eastern MA? Going to the dentist in CT has been a scheduling challenge.

There must be a bright side somewhere: that means that you'll look forward to a birthday do-over at a more festive time?

Hope the whole thing goes as-smoothly-as-possible.

We should talk, 'cause I am contemplating going to Singapore for the replacement implants.

(Well, we should talk anyway, as I have a number of questions for you, entirely unrelated to dental work.)

I'm surprised and sorry to hear that: I believe it's the same doctors in the Porter and Arlington locations, at different hours. I had two wisdom teeth removed by them, and a root canal, and they were absolutely insistant that I tell them if I felt any pain at all so they could give me more novocaine (which they did), and that I must accept a prescription slip for painkillers afterward even though they knew I intended to use a nonprescription painkiller instead. And after the wisdom teeth removal, they made a point to tell me firmly that I was not to use a nonprescription painkiller as usual but was to go get the prescription one and take it immediately.

If you don't mind saying, may I ask what happened, and about how long ago?

Does this mean they'll be installing a dolphin in your mouth? I'd pay money to download that. ;) -H...

Bet you would.

Trade you videos instead. ;)

I have to say they made me feel like I was on an assembly line. That said, I'm also somewhat disturbed by the offhand manner with which my dentist here treated me yesterday, so I don't know that maybe I'm looking for a more caring dentist than is actually available.

My dental tech, however, was first-rate.

How awful!

I don't know if she's still practicing in the Boston area, but my periodontist was Dr Annie Ansalem. She was kind and patient, and seemed to do a reasonably good job (although she did not, sadly, manage to impress upon me the need for follow-up). I last saw her at Gentle Dental in Brookline, but she was leaving that practice as I was leaving my dental plan, so I don't know where she may have ended up.

ps - The main dentist at that Gentle Dental (Dr Tencer) was an absolute ass. Don't go to him. (The main hygienist was also a holy terror.)

I've been very happy with Jay Morgenstern for a while now. His website (except for "about the doctor" and "news from the office") is mostly about the cosmetic dentistry side of the business, but he's a top-notch general-purpose dentist as well; (617) 277-4100, 1180 Beacon #2B in Brookline. (On the far side of Beacon there's free street parking, too.)

Suck! Well, not *too* hard, don't want to pull any sutures or anything. :-} Sorry you're having tooth eitage. So, yeah, I guess you won't be joining us for Bacco on Wednesday. Maybe some other time, when you can eat solid food again?

I have quite liked my experience with Peter Toyias of Belmont. I've only ever had cleaning, not major work, but I like him in part because I have some unusual dental, um, stuff, and he has neither pushed unnecessary treatment for it nor told me I have TMJ, which I do not. Unlike the detist I fired before him.

I really like the MGH Dental Group which is, unsurprisingly, on Cambridge Street near MGH. [livejournal.com profile] foldedfish recommended them to me when I first moved to Boston. I am fiercly loyal to my hygenist (I hate dentists and she lets me wear my iPod while getting a cleaning). Dr. Lau is supposed to be amazing, though she's very popular.

I also got my wisdom teeth out at their related office in MGH for oral surgery, and they were awesome as well.

Good luck!
