Victoria and PJ introduced us to a new word. They said it was shouted at them as they were walking down Cedar Street today.

They don't know what it means either, but they thought they'd try it randomly in conversation until they found a place where it worked.

Arsemoo?

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] cmeckhardt suggests I emphasize that it is pronounced "ar-se-moo", with three syllables. So, there you go.

I asked Victoria how it was spelled, and wrote it exactly that way!

Ar-se-moo! :)

Perhaps I should edit?

I parsed it the same way. But then, I have a dirty mind. ;-)

I ran google searches for various words that match phonetically. The best one I could come up with is "arsimu", which got me 436 results.

I tried translating the word from other languages using BabelFish. It didn't come up with any meaningful results, although I got some ads about whether or not I wanted to order a Russian bride. Stupid Yahoo.com.

I then tried to figure out where the websites were from, and tried to find embedded English descriptions. I discovered a lot of references to the Balkans. Considering there are 22 million Romanians in the Balkans (the vast majority), I think the word might be in Romanian? Although I am open to other suggestions.

My guess:

Same here; online gaming of dubious character. (Then again, who am I to talk after being a regular inhabitant of YoMamaMoo?)

But perhaps they were sharing their delight at finding a single word that appeared on exactly one web page indexed by google. Until now! We've ruined everything! Alas.

They were local as of two days ago. This all went down on Thursday in Somerville.

They seem well and happy. They took off from Somerville Friday to go wandering around Northern New England. They were headed to New Hampshire, and then Maine, but they were also talking about Vermont.

They didn't have much in the way of detailed plans, which is really their way.

leave it to Vic...

.... to get something stuck in my head for days. On reading your post very early this a.m., I said "arsemoo" to myself in varying tones and volumes and accents, trying to hear any connection to known words and ideas. Not surprisingly, it made its way into the "back of the mind" area, you know, where you work on stuff while you're doing everything else.

So throughout my day today, I find myself suddenly saying or thinking "arsemoo!"
