OK, I may be completely off-base here, but I've seen this enough times that I've now done a rant about, the summary of which is that getting wound up over this issue is fiddling while Rome burns.

For what it's worth, I agree with your rant, especially given that they're only sampling their users, and not actually collecting data on everyone. That said, I opted out because it took about ten seconds, and I'd opt out of any number of other tracking things given the choice.
