...anyone know why maps.google.com doesn't cover China in the detail that ditu.google.com does? I don't think it's non-Western language support, because maps.google.com covers Japan the same way maps.google.co.jp does.

For example:

Maybe it's a data licensing thing? maps.google.com says its China map data is copyright AND and Europa Technologies, whereas ditu.google.com credits Mapabc.com.

Edit: The embedded maps show up just fine in Xjournal, but not when I look at my page.

I'm pasting in the links that Google Maps gives in its "Paste HTML to embed in website" field.

Is that the wrong thing to do?

I believe LJ has some fairly aggressive filtering against embedded content other than images—it's probably being removed by the server. This is, by the way, a feature. :-) This FAQ might be germane, but then again it might not.

Okay, that's an explanation. Although I would observe that Google Map .pngs *are* images...but anyway, it's an explanation. :)

Thanks!

I only see the "link to this page" link and the chain ... erm ... link, which seems to have the same URL. I don't see a "copy and paste this HTML code to embed this content into a web page" link or section, not even with control-clicking on the map portion.

Click on the "Link to this page" link and see what you get.

Ah so. I did not know it would do that, interesting.

Well, comparing what Google Maps provides with what your journal post contains, all that shows up in the source code of the post is the URL for the link to the map page itself, none of the iframe tag bits at all. So, I'm guessing the other person was correct and LiveJournal is stripping out certain HTML. I do think that they have an embed FAQ however, as I've seen embedded YouTube items, but I think it needs to be done in a special way.
