Here's the essay from [livejournal.com profile] nihilistic_kid I mentioned:

"My recent essay, albeit with rather more line breaks than I like, it now up at the Howl site as a sample: Walking on L.I. (opens PDF file)."

It's worth reading even if you're not from Long Island.

thanks-- that was really wonderful. I don't enjoy driving. That has been one of the most frustrating parts of my life here on L.I.

It was easy to walk in Rochester, especially in my neighborhood. It was easy to walk in Cleveland too; despite the sprawl, there were neighborhoods in which you could walk. Here..not so much.

I look forward to living in a neighborhood where I can actually walk--I'll gladly do the 1 1/2 hour commute to get to work in exchange for places to walk.

YES! I hate not being able to walk places - even the few useful places that I can walk to!

Wow that was great, brough back a lot of bad memories from trying to walk in central Suffolk County. I can't even tell you the number of times while wakling in places in Port Jefferson, Rocky Point, and Mt. Sinai I almost got hit or got something thrown at me. The dead animals you find...also fun.

As my ex, a lifelong Bostonian, said on her first visit to my folks' house- "Where the HELL are the sidewalks?!"
