Pączki!

Big Y in Chicopee has pączki, since it's that time of year. They make them fresh every morning and sell out of flavors, so get there early. (Other places in Polish neighborhoods probably have them now too, although I haven't tried in Dorchester.)

In Krakow, "Every Day is Paczki Day".

I had one for breakfast. Well, half of two. Yum.

By the way, if you're going to go out of your way to drive to Chicopee, you may as well stop in Holyoke at Nick's Nest for hot dogs. My uncle and dad grew up going to Nick's.

I used to work at the Big Y in Northampton and loved it when Lent approached because we'd put up big signs that read THE PACZKI ARE COMING and I'd get to draw a little paczki parade on one of the larger chalkboards. Then I'd start every morning with a paczki and not need to eat until 5:30. Good times all around.

I'm sure I can find some around here if I ask nicely.

In fact, that was the place "in Dorchester" I was thinking of! I was impressed by the extensive selection of baked goods last time we were there.

Ah, yeah. Until this visit I didn't know how much Chicopee was a center of Polish food. Come to think of it, though, the only woman I know who was from Chicopee is Polish--although I've lost track of her since--so I should possibly have realized that.

The bear was much better last week than I remembered it from a couple of years ago! It was tasty.

Isn't there a closer Big Y? Like maybe in Worcester?
