I now have no problem with changing a tire in a garage--particularly with a lift; that's just fun--but I still call AAA to come out to do it if I need a tire change on the road. Too many drivers who can't seem to resist hitting people on the freeway to make changing a tire a really safe operation.
I started reading this and going "WTF" and then realized that the three or four times I've changed a tire on the road have been either on pretty little rural roads, or passenger-side tires, or both. I'd want to have something big and covered in flashing lights behind and to the left of me before changing a driver's-side tire on an Interstate.
The last time I had to do an emergency tire change was way back in, oh, '84, when I had a Datsun 210 (last year badged as such, instead of a Nissan, it was my Dad's before it was mine).
I was coming home from the San Jose Tower Records with my girlfriend of the time, and we were cutting it close to when she had to be home by. And then the tire blew on highway 17 (880 now). Because her mother was an utter shit and ... very disturbing, I found out I could change a tire in less than five minutes in that car.
But the shoulder was wide there, and it was on the passenger side.
The RX-8 doesn't have a spare, oddly enough, but if I could change a tire without being over the side line, I'd do so. Maybe I'm too trusting.
