My experience of long flights has improved since I started putting earplugs in my ears before takeoff.

You should try EarPlanes. I wont fly without them. My ears always bothered me when flying, but I had one really bad flight once where I was in tears from the pain in my ears, that I considered never flying again. I tried Earplanes and now flying is not a problem for me. They work great!

Thanks for the pointer!

I don't actually have any trouble with pressure. It's the noise.

Regular women's ear plugs* work just great for me, and I have them around anyway for sleeping. They're really useful in hostels, for one thing.

*Earplugs for women aren't quite as dumb as Bic pens for women. They are smaller, so they don't fall out of my ears the way the larger ones do.

Earplanes also reduce the noise, not completely, you can still hear people talking right next to you, but it lowers the volume of the engine noise a bit.

Things are so loud on planes that I can hear the announcements and everything right through the -30db earplugs. It's kind of amazing.

But what earplugs do is reduce my fatigue. It's just less tiring. The nine-plus hour flight from New York to Rio was a lot easier than I remember it being before.

I haven't tried it going across the Pacific yet but I'm guessing it will still help.
