Facebook now appears to think I'm from the subcontinent, or of South Asian ancestry.

This is progress of a sort. Some months ago I think they thought I was Jewish, as I was getting the same egg donor ad from the same people but with the title "Jewish Egg Donors Needed". They also used a different photo.

I suppose it's the sari ads I clicked on a while back.

I actually was an egg donor back in the day...why on earth would they drag you to NYC? They can freeze the eggs now.

I have no idea. Does it all sound a bit dodgy to you, too?

To be vetted by the "recipients", perhaps? To ensure that everything is under US legal jurisdiction? Or perhaps the whole thing is operated by a US hospital or doctor group, and they want to get the money for all the procedures.

You know, I don't think you were trying to sound aggressive here, but this is pretty challenging phrasing to someone who has actually gone through the process of egg donation. I have some thoughts myself on why dragging the donor anywhere is a problematic sign, but given that I have no personal experience of the process (as donor, recipient, significant other, or medical professional) I thought I'd show some deference to someone who has.

If you have some personal experience of the process that might inform the discussion, that'd be helpful.

Perhaps so, I'm tone-deaf there. OTOH, the actual egg donor wasn't dragged to NYC and didn't suggest that she herself was traumatized, but was asking "What possible reasons are there to want to take an egg donor to NYC?"

You may want to think about that, because this is one of those situations that reminds me of the Megan McArdle article you just posted about:
It is a general rule about how people of all genders and political ideologies interact with women who assert their right to have strong opinions about important issues. I was not issuing dicta; I was trying to start a conversation about how people view women.

It's true! They haven't ever shown me an ad that says "Chinese Egg Donors Wanted".

Perhaps it's because they haven't given me any ads for 旗袍 to click on.

Wait... Facebook thinks you're a potential egg donor? You would think that gender-detection is about as basic a dossier-analysis task as one imagine. Does that mean that corporate Little Brother as incompetent as public-sector Big Brother?

Facebook thinks I'm a potential egg donor for entirely legitimate reasons, as I specified my gender as female when I signed up.

ETA: A couple of the funnier results of this are here and here. Note that I have been clicking on my interests as I find them.
