Rice cookers* turn out to be quite good at steaming corn on the cob. I did have to break the cobs in half in order to stand them on end in the rice pot.

And after they're done, the steamer goes into "warm" mode, and keeps them nice and hot.

*Ones designed like mine, with a stainless steel rice pot or aluminum steamer basket that sits in a boiling water bath, at least. It's basically an electric double boiler.

Other designs may not steam corn the same way.

I've been thinking I don't need a rice cooker, because rice is easy and I have more burners than spare counter space, but an electric double boiler is tempting.

Steel-cut oats are next, I think.

Do you often steam other stuff in it, as well? I know some rice cookers are designed to do that, too.

This all reminds me that I'm out of brown Calrose. I'm kind of hooked on brown Calrose....

Pretty much anything that needs wet heat I can do in the rice cooker. Vegetables do pretty well, for example. Mine is definitely designed for a variety of uses, as it comes with a steamer tray.

Corn in the husks can also easily be cooked in a microwave -- 3 minutes on HIGH. It will be VERY hot when you take it out, so be careful.

Yes, that's what bedfull_o_books usually does. I wanted to try the rice cooker this time because she had already de-husked the corn--it had been sitting in a wet bag a bit too long. It was pretty easy to just pop them into the rice cooker.

And now I have another way to cook corn on the cob.
