I'm going to be interested to see how this affects the real estate market

Yes, that is an interesting question!

The Chinese stock market itself is a casino. It's not particularly important on its own--except of course to the people who are gambling speculating there. But the effects of its crash on other markets will be interesting. Real estate markets in China, and in places with markets dependent on Chinese buyers, in particular may be affected.

Is any other stock market less of a casino? The Chinese one seems perhaps higher-variance, and the government manipulation thereof seems a bit more ham-fisted (presumably due to lack of practice), but the fundamental game looks the same from here. (I am however curious to hear about what I don't know!)

This is a complicated question to answer, and I'm still working on the long answer, which if you don't mind I'm going to hoist up into a post of its own along with your question.

The short answer is "Absolutely." That would be a sufficient answer if I thought your question was just glib snark. I don't think that, so I've been working on a long answer.

Anyway, I haven't forgotten about your question but life has been busy, so it may be a while before I post.

Thank you! I do appreciate it, and it's very much a serious question. I've read a bunch of stuff on how markets work and the US stock market in particular (in particular in the last few years where I've been essentially getting paid partly in stock), but I still feel like there is a dynamic that I'm just not appreciating the way I should. Another perspective would be interesting, and most especially yours!
