Yet again stunned by people displaying a spectacular lack of awareness of their privilege. In a conversation about privilege, of course.

"Fish don't see water" and all that.

I suppose I should just get used to it, because it's not like it's going to stop happening.

Nice straight white upper-middle class liberals.

Not like I'm surprised, because they've got all the high cards.

Yeah. :( And how... when people are patting themselves on their backs, how do we make them see air? How do we make them notice the water we're drowning in while they self-congratulate? Why do we even have to?

I am already way too tired, both today and of this cropping up over and over, to be eloquent. But/and yeah, I so hear you.

Why do we even have to?

Not our job, I don't think. I think one thing I can do is change the way I react to people who can't see the water.

I agree, not your job, unless you personally want it to be. That's white people work; about time we did some work.

i get this, though. i live in a tiny upstairs apartment in a 160-year old house with barely any income and i often look at property (like today) and think "GAH, I have nothing."

and then i slap myself, because i'm warm, fed, have a good relationship with someone who loves me, tons of friends all over the country if not world, and things i love to do in life. yes, some of them are on hold now, until i find or figure out land to garden on, and yes, house valuations (even here in bumblef*ck Maine) are too high, but the people who previously owned the house we looked at today had four or five kids, and divorced, and lost the house to foreclosure.

and even they, at least weren't fleeing a druglord or warzone.

so life can always be worse.
