It looks like Mnangagwa isn't really from the military, though it's clear that he has gotten the post by ensuring the military supported him. The betting seems to be that the future of Zimbabwe won't suck as much as the past, but Mnangagwa has a long history as Mugabe's enforcer.

ETA: Then again, you wonder if the Chinese had their fingers in this somehow. (Christ, how far has the US fallen? It used to be that a sparrow didn't fall in the woods without suspicion that the CIA had offed it. Now, the US has given up on so much of the world that paranoid fantasies have to be hung off a different great power.)
