"Are Americans really like those weird people on Jerry Springer?" I got asked this question by a number of South Africans. I have to think that the show's ratings are good.
People did also say that the Americans who they met who had come to South Africa were different. But they were trying to figure out what this strange country was like from some very unrepresentative people.

<convulse><cringe> Have you seen the people in question?
Date: 2003-10-29 03:11 pm (UTC)These people are utter troglodytes. I used to be subjected to this show back a couple of years when my house mate went through a phase of watching it.
The thing always seems to degenerate into two painfully ignorant parties screeching at each other, stalking off stage, and generally carrying on in a manner that would embarrass even the most jaded citizen on the street.
My house mate's stance on the whole thing was "It's entertainment". At the risk of coming across like a stick in the mud, my response was and is "No, it's PAINFUL in the extreme. How can that be entertaining?"
To each his own I guess. Nice to see that the very worst exemplars of American culture are fanning out across the globe like some hateful virus gone horribly amok.
Ahem. Anyway, I should take a shower and go to work :)
