Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] redhound, who says:

"One of the more intriguing applications of the blog format is these blogs that sequentially reproduce one of the classic diarists (I'm sure there's a nice literary term that is to diaries as 'epistolary' is to letters, but I can't think of it). The first one I encountered was the site that was printing one entry from Samuel Pepys' diaries on the appropriate day, offset however many years.

"Now, however, someone's doing a modern translation of the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon in blog format. This is inspired, as the Pillow Book is crammed full of drama and bitchiness in the highest LJ tradition. I halfway wish all the random lists the book is full of had been rendered as memes, but that would arguably be taking undue liberties.

"Anyway, check it out."

I actually compared the Pillow Book to LJ (http://www.livejournal.com/users/tafkar/693515.html) when I was reading it for class. I found that link, but I guess I never posted it...

So did we, as a matter of fact, in my "Tale of Genji and the Pillow Book" class last semester. We contrasted it to Lady Murasaki's diary, which is much more formal and traditional (and not epistolary or meme-ish at all.)
