The world sushi trade: An appetite for disaster

The hunting of bluefin tuna is a hi-tech marvel. But global greed is leading to the extinction of one of the world's great fish.

By Peter Popham

27 May 2005

"The whole affair is a miracle of the modern world. One stands aghast and amazed before the complexity and cleverness of it. There's only one thing about it that is not so smart: it is leading, fast, to the extinction of the bluefin tuna. Faster than a speeding bullet, this industry is disappearing up its own fundament."

Reminds me of what happened to the Atlantic Cod.

Everything I've read about the state of the Mediteranean fisheries points to the impending collapse of pretty much all of them. (There was a good piece recently, maybe in Economist, that provided an overview, but it's been the same story everywhere.) Without regulation and enforcement, I think they're screwed.

I'm guessing maybe it's this one from May 4th? I'll have to look at the dead trees version because they're charging for the online one.

Nope, longer ago than that. Not that the news is different. (The article I remember started off with a poignant account of an inshore Greek fisherman going to great ends setting up traps to catch the odd straggler in what was historically an excellent fishing ground but where today there are, roughly speaking, no fish at all. I could easily believe it wasn't the Economist, too.)
