[livejournal.com profile] bedfull_o_books and I went for a couple of walks along the beach. I'd initially had grandiose ideas to drive to Maine, but between waking up late, and seeing that the forecasted high in Portland was actually a degree above that in Boston, we decided to set our sights a bit lower.

We ended up visiting Revere Beach and stopping for a snack at Kelly's Roast Beef, taking a walk at ankle depth for a while along the beach. Then we drove up to Nahant and toured the neighborhoods on Nahant and Little Nahant, looking at houses. Finally we wandered for a while along Nahant Beach.

There were quite a few people out, though it wasn't by any stretch of the imagination crowded. We saw a mix of ethnicities--not a surprise, on the Revere/Lynn bit of the coast--which was nice. (I'd remembered that [livejournal.com profile] thespian had posted about Loving Day, and that maybe I'd post about it next June 12th. We're sort of a poster couple for that, so that might be appropriate.)

As a beach, Nahant Beach is much nicer than Revere Beach. The smell of the roses in the hedgerow hangs in the air as you walk past them to the water. But we liked walking along them both.

We drove back from Nahant through a neighborhood in Lynn that was alternately Khmer and Hispanic. We passed a place that advertised Cuban sandwiches. It looked interesting, but neither of us were hungry. I also thought aloud that no one would go try them even if I wrote them up, because they were in Lynn. [livejournal.com profile] bedfull_o_books said [livejournal.com profile] drbitch and [livejournal.com profile] frotz likely would, and I agreed that was true.

We stopped by the fabric store to pick up patterns so we could make Hawaiian shirts for [livejournal.com profile] ccunningham's bash. I discovered that one of the major pattern makers has created patterns for costumes in the spirit of movies like The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Lord of the Rings. All without attribution or direct reference, of course, since they certainly don't want to pay the corresponding fees.

Finally, we got home well after dark, fully intending to call [livejournal.com profile] cmeckhardt about visiting and admiring her new-old sewing machine, but we both fell over and didn't wake up until after midnight. Oops.

Umm... I'm always interested in restaurant reviews in the Lynn area. We drive through Lynn every week or three to visit the in-laws (who live in Swampscott (next door to Lynn)).

I agree about Nahant beach, though I do rather like making myself ill with Kelly's fried clams & onion rings.

Okay, cool! We didn't actually stop this time because neither of us was hungry, but I'll keep that in mind.

Yum. We had those today, minus the getting ill part. :)

chuckle! do recall that 1) i work in lynn, and 2) i'm always looking for interesting local food. care to check it out sometime? i'm at work tuesday-thursday; no time tomorrow (working straight through from 11-7pm), but weds or thurs are possibilities.

Sure, that'd be fun! There's a lot of interesting local food around, btw. I meant to tell you; there are a few places walking distance from your studio. Have you tried them?

Tomorrow is no good for me either, and I was initially intending to go back down to CT and NY midweek. However, I'll let you know if that changes.

We have lots of catching up to do!

oh, very cool! i um haven't actually made it to the somerville studio in quite some time, alas. perhaps good food nearby would be as good a motivator as any. :/ what did you have in mind? there is a mexican bar/dive that has always looked intriguing at a level beyond the mexican quickstops that i'm told aren't all that great; and there are at least two bakeries (brazillian? or something) that i want to go to: one is further up on b'way that i've been to that i'd go back to in a heartbeat, and the other on mcgrath that i've not been to that just looks interesting.

um, oh, and if you ever want to road trip to brooklyn for the day... *grin* (i should be careful about saying such things -- you're the one person i know who'd probably smile and say "sure!" :)) )

If you're around this afternoon, I should be home.

The afternoon's mostly over but if you're still there I can stop by.

Cool! I'm currently engaged in herding cats (theoretical good-bye dinner for a friend who's leaving to work at the Folklife Festival on the Mall in DC) but after I finish doing that I'll have a much better idea of my time window.

one? i'm pretty sure *all* the major pattern makers do this. it never fails to entertain me.

by the way, there are also Titanic costumes, Shakespeare in Love costumes and Chicago costumes, just to name a few -- oh, and who could forget Harry Potter! what really amuses me are the models they get, who all look like distorted, less attractive versions of the actors whose costumes the patterns imitate...

hmm. i think i spend too much time in fabric stores...

also, why do the pattern makers think that only women are interested in medieval garb? for every men's pattern there are 4 or 5 women's. grrr. (as a woman this is not so much my problem, but it makes it harder to make garb for friends...)

True enough; I only found them in the one I looked at, so I didn't want to claim more knowledge than I actually had. :)

I don't know...is that possible? Various friends don't think so. :)

Sympathy. We were looking for shirt patterns suitable for men. This was a minor challenge, though it didn't take too long for us to find one.
