I would see them all the time, carried by fashionable young women in Bangkok, who used them to maintain their porcelain-pale complexions. They could be distinguished from umbrellas by their shiny silver top surfaces, but worked to protect from both sun and rain.
I saw them being carried, but never found a vendor. I wasn't looking particularly hard, as I thought it silly to bring one home.
Perhaps I was wrong. I walked a couple of miles in this heat at noontime. I wanted a parasol.

Date: 2006-06-20 01:51 pm (UTC)I mean, £7.95 each is all well and good, but not for a minimum order of *fifty*!

Date: 2006-06-20 01:52 pm (UTC)Although yesterday I was very conscious of the sun on the rest of my body as well as my head.

Date: 2006-06-20 01:10 am (UTC)I've seen them, but in paper form... thus I'm thinking rain would be bad.
I want one too.
Now I'm gonna have to look online, I'll tell ya if I find any.

Date: 2006-06-20 07:56 am (UTC)(though, these days, everyone's using them for the rain - it has'nt really stopped since I LEFT a month ago!)
By the way, on the subject of porcelain-pale complexions, don't know if you noticed, but you know all those creams and lotions that get marketed as having "anti-wrinkling/anti-aging" properties in the US?
The exact same stuff (as near as I've been able to determine) is touted as having as "skin-whitening" properties down here on the equator....

Date: 2006-06-20 01:47 pm (UTC)Oh, they are. They tend to look like this:

That being said, would you still like one? *grins*
Thanks! But I think I'll come get it. This is one of the first times I think I've thought of having one here, and I'm terrible about keeping umbrellas.
(Also, I have a question for you which I'll ask in email. puffydrake @ LJ work for you?)
The whole skin-whitening thing rather disturbs me, actually.

Date: 2006-06-20 02:08 pm (UTC)Much more practical, but not as fun.
It was good running into the two of you yesterday (was that really yesterday?). This weekend we promised each other we wouldn't accept any social engagements and the next we will be in Montreal, but we'll have to get together some time soon. Do you have any interest in seeing Taming of the Shrew in the Common?
