I ate at the Krystal in Pigeon Forge, TN on Sunday, as I was slowly following traffic down US 441 towards Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Krystal (their signature burger) is a lot like a White Castle slider, except that the Krystal I got had a pickle slice in it. I'm not much of a connoisseur of these little burgers, so there may well be other differences. In fact, I'd be interested in finding out if anyone who is might be able to tell me what other differences there are between the two.

There doesn't seem to be much overlap in the restaurant areas, except in Kentucky and Tennessee, so maybe not that many people on my friends list have visited both.

I wonder why Instant Comment isn't working...

Every WC I've ever had has had pickle unless requested otherwise.

And aren't Krystals grilled, unlike the 'steamed' WC? Or is (was?) that just a Little Tavern thing?

Huh. I've gotten White Castle burgers without pickles without asking. But not consistently.

I didn't notice whether the Krystal was grilled. It tasted very much like a White Castle burger to me. Never been to Little Tavern, though.

Oddly, I set my login to "remember me", and yet still the post came up anonymously. Maybe the cookie self-destructed.

They both occur in Florida too, for some reason.

Interesting.

So, I forgot to ask today...what was the other place besides Ollie's Trolley we had to visit?

I *loved* Krystal burgers as a young child. They were much better than McDonalds. We moved to Connecticut when I was six, and I haven't had one since. But alas, I've also never had a White Castle burger in all my time in the North East either.

To be fair, White Castle isn't easy to find up there.

As near as I can tell a White Castle is the Yankee version of a Krystal. They're both small and square, both steamed over oniony water, and both have lovely soft onions inside. Ah junk food of my youth. I miss Krystals like crazy, especially when hungry at 2:00 AM.
